Urban Residence
For Interior Studio I, I was tasked with designing an urban residence using an existing 18’x18’ 2-level warehouse. I also chose to expand my project into the 8’ wide courtyard adjacent to the structure but still on the property. With an emphasis on space planning in a limited volume, I designed this residence for my client: a marine biologist who works on research ships in the field. Beginning in conceptual stages, I developed the ideas of void versus solid, open versus closed, and verticality, all stemming from my original concepts of release and ship versus submarine. The home includes a vertical gallery space that runs upwards through the staircase, built in furniture to maximize space, a perforated metal-style “bridge” running parallel to the street that allows light to filter through the second floor front windows, through the frosted glass bathroom wall, and into the spaces on the first floor.
